CACTUS PEAR MUSICAL MOMENT #8
On Saturday, July 13, 2019, at San Antonio's Trinity Baptist Church, Jeff Garza & Johanna Yarbrough, horns;
Sandy Yamamoto & myself, violins; Carole Cook, viola; and Lachezar Kostov, cello
mesmerized the audience
when they performed Beethoven's Sextet in E-flat, Op. 81b for two horns & strings (1795)
Enjoy this performance of the Allegro con brio first movement.

Featured horn musicians on the Beethoven Jeff Garza and Johanna Yarbrough are seen above performing Verne Reynolds' "Antiphonal Calls" that was also on the "Baying at the Moon" concert program that same evening.
From CPMF's program annotator Jeffrey Sykes' 2019 summer festival notes …
The Sextet was likely composed in 1795 for performance by the Bonn music publisher and horn player Nicolaus Simrock. Simrock had been a close friend and colleague of Beethoven in Bonn; the two played together in the electoral orchestra, Simrock on horn, Beethoven on viola. The horn parts of the Sextet are prominent and difficult; they would have been a worthy challenge to Beethoven’s friend. Years later, Beethoven wrote to Simrock’s son, “Your father will probably still remember how I asked him about certain notes on the horn and will notice that the former pupil now gives his master some hard nuts to crack.”

Like Mozart’s Horn Quintet, Beethoven’s Sextet is in three movements, each of which features brilliant passage-work by the horns. The music is light and unassuming in character—a far cry from the adventurous music of the Moonlight Sonata with which today’s program began, and a far cry from the style of music for which Beethoven is most famous. The work was published by Simrock in 1810, 15 years after Beethoven wrote it—thus the late opus number 81b.

Enjoy listening to this pitch-perfect and energetic performance.
Wasn't that exquisite? Isn't that essential? The beauty, the expertise, the artistry? And the hope it brings?
